City Councilmember Ceasar Mitchell and PATH Foundation to Dedicate Walking Trail to Memory of 10-year-old Southwest Atlanta Girl at 2pm, Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 WHO/WHAT: Atlanta City Councilmember Ceasar Mitchell, the family of Crystal Sykes, the PATH Foundation, and neighbors from the Venetian Hills/Westridge/Sandtown communities will gather to unveil and dedicate a PATH Walking Trail in memory of Crystal Sykes. The 10-year-old died due to injuries she received while riding her bicycle on Cahaba Drive (a then unpaved street) in southwest Atlanta in July 1997.
Since 2001, Councilmember Mitchell has led the charge to address the community’s concerns for the safety of those using the once unpaved street near John A. White Park. Councilmember Mitchell secured private support from the PATH Foundation and provided $18,000 from his Post 1 City Council account to clear the road, remove trees, perform paving, create a memorial, and transform the road into a walking trail.
The dedication will include the unveiling of a permanent memorial for Crystal Sykes and a blessing of the trail.
WHEN: 2pm-3pm, Sunday, October 25, 2009,
WHERE: Cahaba Drive at Sandtown Road, SW, adjacent to 1860 Sandtown Road, SW, Atlanta GA 30311. Parking is permitted on Cahaba Drive at Sandtown Road, across the street from the walking trail entrance.
